Pewit Carr Local Nature Reserve

A local nature reserve, is now a wildflower meadow with trees, diverse wildlife, and a pond, situated near Manor Floods and Straw's Bridge.

Pewit Carr Local Nature Reserve, Ilkeston, includes a section of the Nutbrook Canal, a pond, carr woodland, and a species-rich meadow of exceptional quality.

Arising from historical mining subsidence, the area now boasts a diverse array of wetland habitats. These include alder carr woodland, hawthorn scrub, reedbeds, remnants of the old canal, blooming meadows, and expanses of open water frequented by swans and wildfowl throughout the year. It serves as a vital sanctuary for numerous plant and animal species.

During the peak of summer, the grasslands teem with a wide array of butterflies, dragonflies, and other insects. Active management of these grasslands ensures the preservation of wildflower diversity and insect populations while preventing the spread of invasive scrub.

Pewit Carr is a cherished recreational spot for the community, open to visitors all year round.
