The Iron Giant of the Erewash Valley, Bennerley Viaduct stands as a testament to the era of steam and coal, being the longest Victorian wrought iron viaduct in the UK. Revitalised in 2022, it now serves as a pathway for walking and cycling, offering visitors the chance to appreciate the views from its deck and discover the natural trail below.
Erected in 1878, the viaduct was designed to support the Great Northern Railway’s branch line connecting Nottingham Victoria to Derby Friargate stations, spanning the border between Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire near Ilkeston. After its closure to rail traffic in the 1960s, it has gained popularity among walkers, cyclists, and railway aficionados, featuring a newly installed deck in place of the old railway tracks. Equipped with a ramp on one side and steps on the other, it allows for panoramic views that stretch to Crich Stand and Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station, while also offering a nature area below where volunteers work to restore local wildlife and plant life.
Linking to the towpaths of the Nottingham and Erewash canals, as well as various regional trails, the viaduct is a notable point of interest to consider visiting.
While there is no charge for visiting the viaduct, which is accessible daily, the Friends of Bennerley Viaduct, the charity responsible for its upkeep, organizes guided tours and special events throughout the year. For dates and additional information, please refer to their schedule of events.
This walk over and around Bennerley Viaduct offers a unique experience to get up close to a magnificent piece of history. Located near Ilkeston, the viaduct straddles the border between Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire and is easily accessible by public transport from Nottingham and Derby. Thanks to a devoted grassroots group, The Friends of Bennerley Viaduct, the viaduct has been restored and is now a walking and cycling path for all to enjoy! The new viaduct platform offers an exciting skywalk and with its new ramp approach on the Erewash canal side, it is accessible for wheels of all kinds.
