Welcome to Gnome Island

Nestled on Nottingham Road in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, Gnome Island is a creative roundabout that has captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike. What began as a curious appearance of garden gnomes on artificial grass has blossomed into a beloved landmark, brimming with charm and mystery.

The Tale of Gnome Island

The story of Gnome Island began in 2015 when Erewash Council officially named the roundabout “Gnome Island.” It all started with the mysterious arrival of garden gnomes, delighting passersby and sparking curiosity. Children would stop to marvel at the tiny figures, and bus passengers could be seen pointing and smiling. However, the gnomes faced challenges, including vandalism, which led to their temporary disappearance. However, it was revealed in a few photos on Facebook that they occasionally appeared at events and other locations in and around Ilkeston. Despite this, the island retained its name and spirit, becoming a symbol of resilience and community.

Ilson Gnome

At the heart of Gnome Island's story is Ilson Gnome, the original gnome who first appeared on the roundabout. Over time, Ilson Gnome has become a local celebrity, representing the quirky and creative spirit of Ilkeston. He has made appearances at events, including the iconic Glastonbury Music Festival, where he proudly waved his banner and hobnobbed with stars like Elton John. Ilson Gnome's adventures have put Ilkeston on the map, and his Facebook page has garnered thousands of followers who eagerly await updates on his escapades.
