The Story of Gnome Island

The tale of Gnome Island began in 2015 when Erewash Council officially gave the roundabout its whimsical name. Initially, garden gnomes started appearing unexpectedly, delighting passersby and sparking curiosity. Children often stopped to marvel at the tiny figures, while bus passengers pointed them out with smiles.

However, the gnomes faced challenges. Over time, acts of vandalism led to their disappearance, making many wonder if they would return. Despite these setbacks, occasional sightings of the gnomes at various events around Ilkeston reassured locals that their presence was far from forgotten. As a result, the island retained its name and symbolic importance, standing as a testament to resilience and community spirit.

Meet Ilson Gnome

At the heart of Gnome Island’s story is Ilson Gnome—the original gnome who first appeared on the roundabout. Over the years, he has become a local celebrity, representing Ilkeston’s quirky and creative nature. Not only has he made appearances at community events, but he has even travelled to major festivals, including Glastonbury, where he proudly waved his banner alongside stars like Elton John. Ilson Gnome's adventures have put Ilkeston on the map, and his dedicated Facebook page has attracted thousands of followers eager to track his latest escapades.

The term “gnome” is believed to have originated from the Latin word “gnomus,” which means “earth dweller.” Gnomes were considered protectors of hidden treasures and minerals, often residing in forests, gardens, and underground realms.

Visitors to Gnome Island often notice a mysterious hatch that officially serves as an access point to underground utilities. However, legend suggests that this hatch is much more than that—it is believed to be a gateway to the gnome world. According to local tales, gnomes use this secret entrance to travel between their underground realm and the surface, ensuring their secrecy remains intact.

Why We Don’t always See Gnomes

One reason gnome sightings are so rare is their preference for solitude. These mythical beings avoid human contact, emerging only when they feel completely safe and unobserved. Their underground home allows them to stay hidden while continuing their silent guardianship of the Earth.

Because of this, there is growing interest in creating a more secure and stable home for the gnomes—one that protects them from vandalism and natural threats. This would serve as both a tribute to their legacy and a way to preserve the magic of Gnome Island.
